Known as Hom Mali in Thai, the name is often thought to imply that the rice has a jasmine-like scent, but in fact the aroma is closer to pandan, a fragrant tropical plant of the screwpine family. In reality, the jasmine appellation refers to the color of the grain, which is as white as the jasmine flower.
